 COURSE DESCRIPTION                                                                                                          3  Units

87      Introduction to Purchasing

 

PREREQUISITE:  None.

 

Study of basic purchasing functions including establishing requirements and quantities, developing policies and procedures for purchasing, making purchasing decisions, receiving acceptable goods, arranging packaging and shipping, and managing inventory levels.  Total of 54 hours lecture.

 

 

SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE

 

Study of basic purchasing functions including establishing requirements and quantities, developing purchasing policies and procedures, receiving acceptable goods, arranging for packaging and shipping and managing inventory control.

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

          Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

 

          1.       Formulate requirements and quantities.

 

          2.       Explain purchasing policies and procedures.

 

3.              Formulate purchasing decisions.

 

4.              Arrange to receive acceptable goods.

 

5.              Demonstrate packaging and shipping methods.

 

6.              Calculate and analyze inventory levels.

 

 

COURSE CONTENT

 

          TOPICS

 

 

1.       The purchasing function

 

          2.       Establishing requirements and quantities

 

          3.       Purchasing policies and procedures

 

4.              Acceptable deliveries

 

5.              Packaging and shipping

 

6.              Managing inventory levels

 

Students are also assigned reading, writing and other outside assignments equivalent to two hours per one hour lecture.

 

 

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION   

 

          Methods of instruction may include, but are not limited to:

 

          Class lectures/discussions/demonstrations

          Videos/films/slides/audio tapes/internet presentations and exercises

          Pair and small group activities/discussion

          Class exercises

          Reports and papers

          Handouts

          Cooperative learning tasks

          Individual conferences

          Guest lecturers

          Computer aided / web enhanced

          Distance learning (on-line or hybrid)

 

METHODS OF EVALUATION  

 

Students will be evaluated for mastery of learning objectives by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

 

          Oral reports/presentations/performance

          Written reports/presentations

          Quizzes/examinations

          Written assignments

          Class and individual projects

          Participation

             Final examination

All materials used in this course will be periodically reviewed to ensure that they are appropriate for college level instruction. Possible texts include but are not limited to:

 

Leenders, Fearon, Flynn & Johnson. Purchasing & Supply Management, 12th edition, Irwin-McGraw Hill, 2002.
